Mackerel School

June 17, 2025 - November 3rd, 2025

The California Nature Art Museum is excited to host Mackerel School, a dynamic art installation by Angelina LaPointe of Sidecar Press. Every shining fish, depicting California’s native Pacific Mackerel, is a linoleum block print on laser-cut wood.

About the Artist

Artwork by Angelina LaPointe

Angelina LaPointe is a Lompoc, California-based multidisciplinary artist who specializes in block and letterpress printing.

Block printing is a relief printing method in which a design is carved into a solid block, inked on the raised surface, and transferred onto paper or fabric. LaPointe’s process drafts a comprehensive drawing; transfers the image to a linoleum block, and hand carves lines and shapes into the block. Finally, she locks it into her 1896 Chandler and Price letterpress, and prints in editions ranging from 5 to 200.

The founder of Sidecar Press, her vibrant prints range from portraiture to her native Central Coast’s flora and fauna. She interweaves inspirations from art nouveau to the Russian avant-garde — as well as traditional tattooing, punk posters, and midcentury Time-Life science books. Encompassing fine art, public art, and illustrative commercial print, LaPointe’s work straddles many worlds while always upholding her intrinsic mission and voice.

At present, LaPointe is ideating large-scale modular installations and pursuing public art — community activation and cultivation has become intrinsic to her creative life.
