Between Earth & Sky
November 6th, 2025 - April 20th, 2026
Featuring 20 dazzling photos of bright and beautiful birds amidst the backdrop of California wildflowers, Between Earth & Sky showcases some of local photographer Deborah Kalas’ most spirited work.
This collection of avian photography documents one of her most recent adventures. The series began as a search for beauty closer to home and a visit to a local flower farm, where Kalas was welcomed into lush gardens filled with vibrant blooms-and even more vibrant birds. This turned into a chain of encounters with local growers and hidden habitats, each offering new and unique species and inspiration.
"A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song." -Maya Angelou
About the Artist
Deborah Kalas
“Early in my career, I worked for Life, People, and New York Magazine, focusing on the stories of people’s lives. My passion for wildlife led me to photograph wild horses for my award-winning book The Wild Herd: A Vanishing American Treasure, and to travel the world capturing diverse species.
Since beginning this series, my bird adventures have now stretched from California to New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Utah, New York, and Florida. Birds are everywhere when you stop to listen. Their colors, songs and presence rich the landscape, turning the ordinary into something magical.
Perhaps on your next walk, you will notice a beautiful bird nearby that makes your heart sing!”
